Description
Winchhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600, featuring a brick-faced exterior with rear extensions that were renovated in the late 19th century. The building has a timber frame that is roughcast and faced with sandy red brick, topped by a steeply pitched old red tile roof. It stands two stories tall, with a cellar and attics, and has a gabled rear stair turret located at the end of the cross-passage, which is positioned left of center.
The east front is asymmetrical and has damaged 20th-century windows. There are external chimneys on the north and south gables, with a wide chimney breast made of old brick, and a similar large projecting chimney on the rear wall of the middle room, which is now enclosed in the rear extension.
Inside, the cross-passage retains remnants of early 19th-century wallpaper, beneath which there is board panelling on the left wall. There are two Jacobean heavy moulded door frames with jamb stops. A broad winding Jacobean staircase surrounds an octagonal central mast with pyramid-plus-ball finials, rising through two floors to the attics, where two contemporary doorways lead to separate accommodation. The middle room of the range features broad stopped and chamfered crossed beams, and there is a spine beam on all floors. The south wall has stone moulded four-centred arch fireplaces on the ground and first floors, and a brick four-centred arch fireplace on the second floor. Evidence of wall painting was mostly lost at the time of inspection in February 2003, although some may remain under the lathe and plaster. The former cross passage is located at the service end. There are brick stairs leading to the cellar, which has flint walls and a wide opening under an elliptical brick arch. The roof structure consists of double purlins.
