Description

Box Hall is a house dating from the early 17th century, which has been largely refaced and had its windows changed in the 19th century. The gable end of the west wing was rebuilt around 1940. The building is constructed of red brick and features steep old red tile roofs. It is a large, symmetrically planned E-shaped house, possibly designed to accommodate two households, and is arranged over two storeys, facing south.

The house has projecting gabled wings to the right and a central loft with three windows, while small blocked windows are located at the ends. There is a gabled porch with a battened front door, and the windows are three-light casements set under segmental arches, with one window on each floor in the wings. At the rear, there are two large external lateral chimneys, each with three diagonal shafts, linked at the base by a later lean-to.

Notable features include surviving ovolo-mullioned windows at the west end (four-light) and at the rear (two-light). Inside, the ground floor southwest room is wood panelled, with full-height panels and bolection moulding, and features an arched corner cupboard with shaped shelves. In the lobby to the east, there is another arched corner cupboard with shaped shelves. The house contains various early types of doors with moulded vertical boards, as well as 17th and 18th-century doors, including two panelled doors, one of which has early fielded panels. There are also two straight staircases. An outhouse to the west is not of special interest.
