Description
Nos 38, 40, and 42 on Walkern Road are a row of four terraced houses, now functioning as three, dating from the early 19th century, as indicated by the 1839 Tithe Map. The houses have a timber frame resting on a tarred brick sill. The ground floors of Nos 38 and 40 feature dark weatherboarding with roll-worked edges on each board, while the upper parts are roughcast at the front. No 42 is distinguished by panelled pargetting with raised roundels at floor level. The buildings have a slate roof and two central red brick chimneys. Each house is single-fronted with a double-pile plan, featuring one front window on each floor. The windows are flush box sash style with 8/8 small panes and moulded surrounds, although the ground floor window of No 38 has been replaced by a two-light casement. The doors of Nos 38 and 40 are framed broadly with drip-boards supported by shaped brackets. This pair of houses has seen little alteration and is part of a terrace of four, with No 42 lacking a front door, representing the northernmost pair.
