Description
Nos 9 and 11 on Town Lane are a 16th-century open hall house that has undergone various alterations over the years. Originally featuring a central chimney, the house was later modified with an inserted floor and a brick-faced, gabled west extension added in the 19th century. It was further altered in the mid-20th century following a fire. The timber frame of the building is cased in painted brickwork, and it has a steep old red tile roof with a half hip and a gablet at the east end.
The house is one and a half storeys tall and follows a three-cell central-chimney plan, facing south. The gabled brick front includes a wide segmental arch on the left, which was part of a former shop and is now infilled with a battended entrance door flanked by leaded lights under a flat hood supported by brackets. To the right of the entrance, there are two windows featuring three-light leaded casements. At the eaves, there are two gabled dormers, each with two-light leaded casements. A red brick central chimney has been rebuilt. Inside, the house retains exposed timbers and a dentilled cornice on the chimneypiece.
