Description

White Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations and additions in the 19th century and 20th centuries. The front and north end were recased in brick during the 19th century, and a rear wing was added in the 20th century, along with further extensions around the 1960s. The house is timber-framed, now with painted brick casing, and has a steep roof covered in old red tiles. It is a small, one-and-a-half-story house facing west and set back from the road.

The west front features three gabled dormers in the eaves, with dentilled corbelling beneath the eaves, and a stucco plinth. It has four small, segmental arched windows, each containing two- or three-light flush casement windows. A panelled false door is located on the right-hand side, set within a 20th-century surround with an entablature. A county fire insurance plaque is positioned above the door.

Inside, the house retains exposed timber framing, including a chamfered axial beam and squared joists. A cross partition with pegged joints and wide panels, along with a flint sill wall, is also present. The interior is divided into four bays, containing a large chimney in the second bay from the north, which supports back-to-back fireplaces. Axial joists and a staircase are found in the north bay, and the southern bay appears to have been partitioned off, possibly as a parlour. Other features include jowled posts, straight braces to the tie-beams, a clasped-purlin roof, queen-struts and collar trusses, along with smoke blackening on the roof timbers.
