Description
Ware Pond Cottages, a pair of houses that were formerly a farmhouse, date back to the early 15th century. They are constructed with timber framing and plaster, featuring roofs made of peg tiles that are gabled, except for the east end which has a hipped roof with a gablet. The buildings are two storeys high and have a central stack with two diagonal shafts on the main ridge line. Originally, they were a rectangular block with a crosswing at the west end, which was extended forward in the 19th century. At the rear, there is a 17th-century staircase tower with a gabled roof and lean-to extensions. The north and west faces have jetties and exposed timber framing with long curved bracing. The 19th-century front extension includes a side lean-to with a slate roof. The windows consist of 20th-century casements and 19th-century double-hung sash windows without glazing bars. The early part of the cottages features massive timber framing with jowled posts, arch braces to cambered tie beams, and crown post roofs over both the main block and the crosswing. The bridging joists and imposts are moulded, and there is a large inglenook fireplace with an elaborately moulded mantel beam. Number 2 has an early 19th-century corner cupboard.
