6/38 Ware Pond Cottages (nos. 1 and 2)

Pair of houses, former farmhouse. Early C15. Timber framed and plastered. Roofs are of pegtile and gabled except on the east end where the roof is hipped with a gablet. Of 2 storeys with a stack of 2 diagonal shafts on the centre of the main ridge line. Originally a rectangular block with crosswing at the west end which was extended forward in the C19. At the rear is a C17 staircase tower with gabled roof and lean-to extensions. Part of the north and west faces jettied and of exposed timber framing with long curved bracing. The C19 front extension has a side lean-to with a slate roof. Windows are C20 casements and C19 double hung sash windows without glazing bars. The early part has massive timber framing with jowled posts arch braces to cambered tie beams and crown post roofs over both main block and crosswing. Bridging joists imposts are moulded and the large inglenook fireplace has an elaborately moulded mantel beam. No. 2 has an early C19 corner cupboard. RCHM 25.
