Description

Lower Cottages, located on Leigh Road in Minsterley, are a pair of houses that were likely built in the early 17th century. They have been remodelled and possibly extended in the mid to late 19th century. The structure is timber framed, with some parts rebuilt or refaced in coursed rubblestone and red brick dressings, and the left side is pebbledashed. The right gable end is made of red brick, and the roof is covered with plain tiles.

The cottages consist of two framed bays with later one-room additions at each end, and they are one storey high with an attic. A large central brick ridge stack is present, along with an integral brick end stack on the left side. There are two large gabled eaves dormers featuring three-light wooden casements. The front has four windows, including two 20th-century two-light segmental-headed casements on the left, flanking a 20th-century half-glazed door, and 19th-century two- and three-light segmental-headed wooden casements beside a boarded door on the right.

Inside the right-hand cottage, the ground-floor room features a deep-chamfered beam, plain joists, and a large open fireplace with an ogee-stopped chamfered beam and mantlepiece. The jowls of the posts are visible in the attic room, which has collar and cambered tie-beam trusses with queen struts and v-struts, as well as pairs of purlins with wind braces.
