Description

Brook House is a mid-17th century farmhouse, later divided and now used as a house. It has an L-shaped layout, with two framed bays aligned roughly north-west to south-east, and a single-bay gabled cross-wing projecting to the north-east. The building is timber framed with plastered and painted brick infill, a rubble and brick plinth, and a 20th-century machine tile roof. The framing consists of square panels, three from the sole-plate to the wall-plate, with short straight corner braces. It has one storey and an attic.

The north-west front features an off-centre brick stack on the cross-wing and a 19th-century diagonal brick stack to the rear. The cross-wing has a 19th-century two-light wooden casement and a boarded door to its left. A hall range projects to the right, with 19th-century two-light wooden casements in both floors of the gable end. An exposed collar and tie-beam truss, with queen struts and v-struts, is also visible. The return front to the left has three-light wooden casements to the right and a boarded door to its left, with a gabled porch. A probable 19th-century lean-to addition, with a slate roof, is at the rear.

The interior includes chamfered beams with ogee stops, a large open fireplace with an ogee-stopped chamfered lintel, and old boarded doors with strap hinges.
