Description
The Callow is a cottage dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with likely alterations and additions from the late 18th or 19th century, as well as a 20th-century addition. It features a timber frame with painted brick nogging, a coursed sandstone rubble end wall, and a refaced and partly rebuilt painted brick wall on the right side. The roof is covered with 20th-century asbestos slate. The building consists of two framed bays that are aligned approximately north-south, positioned at right angles to the road, with a later addition to the south.
The framing includes light rectangular panels, and the structure is one storey with an attic, plus a two-storey addition. On the west front, there is an integral brick end stack to the right and a brick ridge stack that is off-centre to the right. A 19th-century gabled semi-dormer, located off-centre to the right, features a four-pane sash window and scalloped barge boards. To the right on the first floor, there is a 19th-century two-light wooden casement window. The ground floor includes three 20th-century two-light wooden casement windows, and there are two 20th-century glazed doors situated between the first and second windows from the left, leading to a 20th-century lean-to glazed porch. Additionally, there is a 20th-century lean-to addition at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
