Description
Oakfields is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and a 20th-century addition. It features a timber frame set on a coursed rubblestone plinth, with plastered and painted brick infill. The end walls are made of coursed sandstone rubble, with the west wall painted and the east wall rendered, likely representing a rebuilding of the timber frame up to the eaves level during the 18th or 19th century. The roof is covered with corrugated iron.
The cottage consists of two framed bays, including one larger bay and a smaller unheated bay to the east. The framing has light square panels, with three panels extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate. It is one storey high with an attic. The north front features a raking eaves dormer, positioned off-centre to the right, which contains a two-light metal casement window. There is an integral brick end stack to the right. The front has two windows, both of which are 20th-century two-light metal casements, and a central doorway with a 20th-century painted brick porch.
Inside, there is a timber-framed square-panelled partition wall that still retains one woven panel. A large tapering stone stack has an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. There is also one chamfered ceiling beam with ogee stops. The joists and floorboards were removed at the time of the survey in July 1985. The roof structure includes a central collar and tie-beam truss with single purlins. A 20th-century one-storey brick addition is set back to the left of the main structure. The rear of the cottage has three windows and a doorway located between the first and second windows from the left.
