Description

The winding engine house, dating from the late 19th century, is located in Snailbeach Lead Mine, Worthen. It is built from regularly coursed limestone rubble, featuring engineering and red brick dressings, and is currently roofless. The structure has a rectangular plan and consists of two levels, with flat-headed window openings that have stone and wooden lintels on the long sides. An external staircase with a cast-iron handrail leads to a blocked doorway at the north-east gable end. This building was likely constructed in the 1870s as part of significant improvements to the mine.
