Description
This is a cottage built in the early 19th century, as shown on the 1847 tithe map. It features painted rubble construction with a brick stack at the right end and a Welsh slate roof. The cottage has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high. The south front has two windows: a single window on the first floor to the left and a two-light window to the right, with the ground-floor window set under a segmental brick arch. There is a mid-20th century timber porch to the left and a brick lean-to to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, this cottage is a little-altered example of a worker's dwelling associated with the mining industry, specifically linked to a site of national importance. Such cottages were commonly built alongside the growth of industrial sites in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Lead mining in the Snailbeach area is believed to date back to the Roman period. The surviving structures in the area, most of which are part of an extensive Scheduled Ancient Monument, represent the most complete group associated with the lead industry in England, reflecting the industry's development from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. These cottages were constructed for the Snailbeach Mining Company, which began operations in 1783, and the site later specialized in producing barytes for the paint industry. Nucleated lead mines like this one were built in large numbers during the Industrial Revolution.
