Description

The Malthouse Surgery is a former malt-house that has been converted into a veterinary surgery, likely dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly squared and coursed rubblestone, with red brick dressings and a rendered south side. The building features a hipped corrugated iron roof sloping to the south and is oriented approximately north-south, with a polygonal end to the south.

The structure stands three storeys tall, with raised brick eaves and a parapeted gable end on the north side. The west front includes three small boarded openings on the second floor beneath the eaves, with a gabled semi-dormered boarded hoist door located between the first and second openings from the right, and a blocked small opening to the left. On the first floor, there are four two-light segmental-headed wooden casements, with the second from the left being a 20th-century replacement of a loading door. The ground floor features three two-light segmental-headed wooden casements, along with a segmental-headed boarded door positioned between the first and second casements from the left. Additionally, there is a two-light wooden casement in the polygonal end to the right.

To the left, there is a two-storey addition that slightly projects from the main building, showcasing a toothed brick eaves cornice and a parapeted gable end. This addition has a small first-floor boarded opening with a brick relieving arch. At the rear, the ground is built up to the first-floor level. This malt-house, along with the former maltster's house to the east, represents a complete example of a small rural maltings.
