Description

Oak Cottage is a 15th-century cottage located on the north west side of Broad Street in Hatfield Broad Oak. It is a timber-framed building, with the south west end plastered and white-boarded. The roof is thatched, hipped at the south west and hipped with a gablet at the other end. A small ridge stack is present. The windows are 20th-century leaded light casements, and there is a single-storey, 20th-century rear extension with a hipped slate roof. The cottage originally comprised a small open hall house with a two-bay hall, a parlour with a solar above at the north east end, and a service room at the south west end. It is a remarkably complete small house, retaining remains of a crown post roof, some diamond mullioned windows, and halved and bridled scarf joints.
