Description

Milestone located on Hockley Road in Rayleigh, dating from the late 18th century. It is made of stone and has a square plan. The road-facing side displays the distance to London as 34 miles and to Southend as 9 miles. This milestone is part of a series that marked the route from London to Southend, as shown on the Chapman & Andre map of 1777. The route included places such as Romford, Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton, Billericay, Wickford, and Rayleigh.
