Description
Milestone located on the verge in front of number 77 on Hawkwell Main Road. This milestone dates from the 18th century and has a square plan that tapers to a domed head with chamfered angles. The road-facing side is inscribed with the distances to London (37 miles) and Southend (6 miles). It is part of a series of milestones from London to Southend, as shown on the Chapman and Andre map of 1777.
