Description
This is an 18th-century milestone located on the northern verge of Hall Road, opposite a house called Birches. It has a rectangular shape with a rounded head. The inscription on the road-facing side indicates that London is 39 miles away and Southend is 4 miles away. A milestone in this location is depicted on the Chapman and Andre Map of Essex from 1777. This milestone is part of a series that includes others on Hall Road and Southend Road in Rochford.
