Description

House, 1930. Designed by Lawrence Crampton of Southend-on-Sea for T.W. Offin. Built of rendered brick with blue brick copings to end stacks. Hipped pantile roof. Crittall metal casement windows throughout.

The house is rectangular in plan with a central entrance and an attached garage and scullery range.

The west elevation to St Andrews Road features a pair of 4-over-8 metal casement windows with shallow projecting surrounds and shutters flanking a central entrance. The front door has 4 glazed lights and a solid panel, set within curved and fluted reveals with a glazed panel to the ceiling and a shallow projecting porch. Brick steps lead to the entrance. At first floor level, a central metal casement of 9 panes (3/3/3) is flanked by single 3-pane windows. The attached single-storey garage has 3 sliding doors on track, with the rightmost door also folding, and features blue brick on edge copings. The hipped roof has deep eaves and a pair of end stacks with blue brick on edge copings.

The north elevation includes a 6-pane (3/3) casement to the first floor right. A single-storey advanced range to the left has 2 glazed panel doors and an adjacent 2-pane window, with a low fuel access door beneath. A prominent central chimneystack bisects the projecting eaves.

The east elevation to the garden has a 14-pane (12 glazed) metal door within a shallow projecting surround to the left, with brick steps, and an 8-pane (4/4) metal window to the right. At ground floor centre is a 2-pane window below a tall slender stair window of 6 panes, both set within a shallow recess. The first floor has a 6-pane window with narrow 3-pane windows to each side. A single-storey scullery slightly advanced to the right has blue brick on edge copings and a 6-pane casement.

The south elevation has a prominent central stack extending the full width of the ground floor through the projecting eaves, with a 6-pane casement to the first floor left.

Internally, a recessed entrance leads to a central hall with rear stair. To the right is a full-depth living room with 2 exposed beams and joists above a high picture rail, and a fireplace with a brick arch to the centre of the outside wall. Glazed doors open to the garden. To the left is a dining room with exposed joists on an angle and a corner fireplace of brick arch. To the rear left is a kitchen with exposed joists, built-in cupboards and access to the scullery. The scullery contains a cold storage larder above a fuel area with exterior access and built-in cupboards. A cloakroom is positioned below the stair.

The wood stairs have closed panelling to the well and upstairs hall, with stepped cap newells. At first floor level, 4 corner bedrooms each have a moulded fireplace, with those on the left placed at the corner with ledges above. Each bedroom has one small and one large window and a picture rail. The rear bedroom to the left is slightly smaller with an adjacent room for a water closet. The bathroom is centrally positioned to the front with a vestibule containing a built-in linen cupboard. Architrave mouldings frame panelled doors with vertical wood handles throughout. The garage has a track for the sliding doors and a brick arched niche.

To St Andrews Road stands a metal barrel railing and oak gate, supported by rendered brick piers with blue brick copings and a concrete plinth.

Original presentation drawings and construction blueprints survive.

This is an intact and interesting suburban house of 1930 in traditional and moderne style, retaining its original elevations, plan form and fittings.
