Description
This is an 18th-century milestone located on the north verge near the crown of the hill on Hockley High Road. The milestone is made of stone and has a square plan that tapers to a domed head with chamfered angles. The road-facing side is inscribed with the distances to London (35 miles) and Southend (8 miles). It is part of a series of milestones that mark the route from London to Southend, which is documented on the Chapman and Andre map of 1777. This series includes milestones along the route through Romford, Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton, Billericay, Wickford, Rayleigh, and ultimately to Southend.
