Description

House, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. The house is mainly timber framed, with rough rendering on some parts and plaster to the ground floor, along with batten decoration on the first floor. Later additions are of brick, also rendered to match the original fabric. The roof is covered in red plain tiles, and there are two brick chimney stacks.

The original part of the house is two storeys high and juts out on the left side (facing the road), with batten decoration on the gable. A two-storey projecting gable, constructed in the 19th century, sits off-centre to the right. This section features moulded timber bressumers and a jetty, partially enclosed by a glazed porch to the right, with turned balusters and upper arches to the jetty on the left. A two-panel, two-light door is set within the jetty. To the left and right of this gable are set-back extensions, with the right-hand one also jutting out. A further gable extension is located at the rear.

The first floor has a window arrangement of 2:2:1:1:1, featuring a mix of 19th and early 20th century casements and vertically sliding sash windows. The ground floor mirrors this with a window arrangement of 3:2:1:1:1, with similar windows. The road-facing side has a 19th-century three-light casement with a transom window on the first floor, and casements with segmental heads on the ground floor.

Inside the original part of the house, side girts, storey posts, and top plates are still visible, along with a large chimney stack to the right, which now has good 19th-century moulded fire surrounds. There are many 18th-century six-panel doors with moulded surrounds, boxed-in bridging joists, and an alcove cupboard.

The North and South Lodges, and the barn (listed separately), were originally part of the Whitbreds estate.
