Description
This milestone, located on the north verge in front of number 72 on Hockley Main Road, dates back to the 18th century. It is made of stone and has a square plan that tapers to a domed head with chamfered angles. The road-facing side is inscribed with the distances to London (36 miles) and Southend (7 miles). This milestone is part of a series that marks the route from London to Southend, as shown on the Chapman and Andre map of 1777.
