Description

Milestone located at the junction of London Road and Meadow Road in Hadleigh, dating from the late 18th century. It has a square stone plan, with the road-facing side inscribed with "London 37 miles" and "Southend 4 miles." This milestone is part of a series that marked the route from London to Southend, as shown on the Chapman & André map of 1777, which included the path through Romford, Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton, Billericay, Wickford, Rayleigh, and onward to Southend.
