Description

This is a Baptist chapel built in 1861, located to the northeast of number 5 on Burnham Road in Southminster. The chapel is constructed of red brick with gault brick quoins and features a gable cornice, upper window arches, and porch pilasters, all accented with painted stone architraves and friezes. The roof is covered with grey slate.

The building has a symmetrical design, with lugged gault pilasters leading into the stone-coped gable cornice. The porch pilasters have gault bases and stone capitals, and there is a plain frieze with a band beneath a slanting slated roof. The entrance has a plain stone architrave surrounding panelled double doors, above which are three adjoining semi-circular headed lights. The outer two lights are glazed with two glazing bars each, while the inner light features a stone plaque inscribed "Baptist Chapel, erected 1861."

On either side of the entrance are tall tapering Egyptian style small paned windows, each with moulded painted stone surrounds, friezes, and moulded canopies supported by brackets. Similar windows are also found on the left and right returns of the chapel. At the rear left, there is a small flat-roofed extension hall built with matching materials, which includes a single small paned window facing forward.
