Description
The Baptist Chapel, located on Wilne Road in Sawley, was built in 1800 and enlarged in 1843. It is constructed of red brick with gauged brick dressings and features a slate roof with a moulded brick eaves cornice. The chapel is a single storey building with a gallery at the north end, arranged in three bays by three bays.
The north elevation showcases a central semi-circular headed doorcase with pilastered jambs, a broken triangular pediment, and double flush panelled doors topped with a traceried fanlight. Flanking this entrance are glazing bar sashes set beneath flat arches, with three semi-circular headed glazing bar sashes above. The gable displays a coffer-shaped plaque inscribed 'Baptist Chapel, erected AD 1800 enlarged AD 1843', and the gable itself features a moulded cornice that returns at the corners to create a large broken pediment.
The side elevations have similar arrangements of glazing bar sashes, while the south gable wall includes two tall blocked semi-circular headed windows. Inside, the chapel has a panelled gallery supported by iron columns, with a turned balustrade at the top of the panelling. The central section of the gallery is slightly advanced and includes a clock face at the front. The nave contains plain box pews and a panelled octagonal pulpit located to the south. There are four wall memorials made of slate and white marble, one dating from around 1877 and the others from the early 20th century. Above in the gallery, there are nine marble wall memorials from various dates, ranging from 1822 to 1851.
