Description
No. 24 West Street is a house that originated in the late 16th century and underwent alterations in the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house consists of four bays aligned north-south, with the gable end facing the street and an axial stack located in the second bay from the south end. There is an early 19th-century one-bay extension to the north, which includes an external stack at the end. Additionally, there is a 19th-century brick extension that runs along the full length of the west side, topped with a catslide roof. The building is one storey high with attics.
On the east elevation, there are three 20th-century casements and two more in gabled dormers. The south elevation, which faces West Street, features three 20th-century casements on the ground floor, one on the first floor, and a 20th-century glazed door. The truss north of the axial stack has jowled posts and arched braces leading to a cambered tiebeam that was originally open. The other posts in the structure are unjowled. Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists of vertical section. The house contains two wood-burning hearths that are back to back, made of 0.23 metre brickwork, with a blocked aperture for a bread oven to the west, although the oven itself has been demolished. One ground-floor room features 19th-century tongued and grooved matchboarding on the ceiling, and the original rebated hardwood floorboards are still present. The property is reported to have deeds dating back to 1592.
