Description

Rose Briar Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, with an extension added in the 20th century. It features a timber frame that is roughcast rendered and has a roof covered with red clay pantiles. The cottage includes a two-bay service crosswing of a medieval hall house, which originally extended to the east but was largely destroyed by fire in the 1920s. An internal stack has been inserted against the west wall, and there is a 20th-century extension to the north.

The house is two storeys tall. On the south elevation facing West Street, there is one 20th-century sash window on each storey, both with diamond leading, and a 20th-century door. The roof has been realigned, with the ridge now running east to west. The structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding, and some wattle and daub infill. An east-west beam has mortices and a wattle groove indicating a former partition between two service rooms. The joists are plastered to the soffits, likely hiding an underbuilt jetty that would have extended to the street.

There is an unglazed window with two diamond mullions and a shutter groove in the west wall, and a similar window with empty mortices in the north wall. The cottage features chamfered arched braces supporting a cambered tiebeam. The crownpost roof has axial bracing, with the original rear bay still intact and featuring a gablet hip, while the formerly gabled front bay has been rebuilt. A wood-burning hearth from the 17th or 18th century is also present.
