Description

White Oaks is a house that has been converted into a bakery, hairdressing salon, and residence. It dates from the 17th century and was extended in the 19th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. It has three bays facing south, with a three-bay crosswing to the right that extends to the rear and includes an internal stack at the junction. There is a single-storey bakery extension at the rear of the left end, which features a large 19th-century baker's oven and a chimney, both roofed with red clay pantiles. A lean-to extension between the rear wings creates a catslide with the main roof, and there is a small 20th-century extension at the rear of the right wing.

The building is two storeys with attics. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century splayed shop window and two 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has three 20th-century casement windows and two 20th-century half-glazed doors. A modillioned cornice runs below the eaves, and a Royal Exchange firemark is attached to the front elevation below the eaves. The structure features jowled posts, chamfered transverse beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists with a vertical section. Above the right first-floor room, there is a chamfered transverse beam with enriched lamb's tongue stops, supported by elaborately carved projections with serrated lower edges, which is an unusual feature for a first-floor setting. The original newel stair leads to the attic, and the building has clasped purlin roofs. Notably, the coal-fired oven, which was still in regular use as of May 1985, is a rare feature.
