Description

The Cage, located immediately southwest of number 7 on Church Street in Tollesbury, is a lock-up building from the 18th century that underwent alterations in the 20th century. It features a timber frame covered with 20th-century waney weatherboarding and is topped with a roof made of handmade red clay plain tiles and 20th-century hip tiles. The structure is square in shape and has a plain boarded door on the west side, equipped with two long hasped iron hinges and a double iron grill. A metal plate on the building is inscribed with 'Village lock-up or cage, A.D. 1700'. The roof is pyramidal and topped with an acorn finial.
