Description

No. 17 on West Street is a house that dates back to around 1500 and the 17th century, with extensions added in the 19th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The main part of the house, which faces north, consists of three bays from the 17th century. To the left, there is a two-bay crosswing from around 1500, which has an 18th or 19th-century internal stack at the rear.

At the back of the main range, there is an early 19th-century parallel range with two external stacks and a small lean-to extension beyond one of the stacks. This extension is weatherboarded and has a roof made of red clay pantiles. There is also a 19th-century lean-to extension at the back of the crosswing, which has a slate roof. The house has a four-window range of 20th-century sash windows and a 20th-century glazed door with a side light.

The roof is hipped at the left end and incorporates the crosswing with the main roof. The crosswing features jowled posts and a cambered tiebeam with arched braces. It is likely that the front of the crosswing was jettied and underbuilt. Inside, there is a crownpost roof with axial braces, which is complete in the rear bay but altered from a gable to a hip in the front bay. The main range has one exposed chamfered beam, while the rest is mainly plastered.
