Description
No. 86 Kings Lane is a house that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original 17th-century structure features a timber frame with plastered infill, although some parts have been replaced with brick at the front and flint on the sides, now covered in pebble-dash. The roof is made of plain tiles and includes a brick stack. The house has a central baffle-entry plan, is two storeys high, and has two bays, with a rear outshut. There is a rear addition from 1952 that is not considered of special interest. The windows are metal-framed and date from the mid-20th century, and there is a part-glazed door. The central ridge stack has a rendered base and a rebuilt top.
Inside, the central chimney features later fireplaces. On the ground floor, there are chamfered spine beams with step cyma joists, old joists, and old floorboards, along with part of a rear rail. The first floor reveals exposed timber frame members, including jowelled wall posts, studs, wall plates, and a central partition. The roof contains a central collared queen-post truss, along with late 18th or early 19th-century unsawn rafters and a plank ridge. A photograph held by the owner shows the building before mid-20th century work was carried out.
