Description
This is a row of shops dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, situated on the east side of High Street in Ongar. The main range is timber-framed and plastered, with a grey slate roof pierced by six flat-headed dormers containing 19th-century casements. It is two storeys high with attics. A second range is incorporated to the right, also with a grey slate roof that hips to the road. The main range has moulded and bracketed eaves. The facade has a nine-window arrangement, with a 20th-century central bay added to the main range. The remaining eight windows have early 19th-century small-paned vertical sliding sashes. The ground floor features a carriageway opening on the left with boarded doors, a 19th-century shop front with two recessed doors, bracketed corners and a vertical strip top rail. A 20th-century half-glazed door is centrally positioned, and to the right is a 20th-century plate glass shop front with a central door and a "Co-operative" fascia above. The right return wall is weatherboarded, and there are three gault brick chimney stacks.
