Description

W.E. Cole and Hairdressing by Eric is a Grade II listed building located on the west side of Ongar High Street. Originally constructed in the 17th century as dwellings with rear wings, the building features a timber frame, with sections that are weatherboarded and others that are rough rendered. It has a red plain tiled roof and stands two stories tall, displaying a five-window range of 17th and 18th century iron. The windows are three-light leaded casements.

On the ground floor, there are two half-glazed doors, four small-paned shop windows, and one iron three-light leaded casement window. The doors are topped with small slanting canopies supported by brackets, and the three windows to the left on the ground floor have pentice boards. The building also has moulded bands below the eaves, and some 17th and 18th century windows can be found on the rear and return walls.

A plaque on the building notes that Joseph King, who passed away on February 28, 1679, left this row of properties, including Nos. 199-205, in trust to provide funding for the schooling of poor children in the parish. The trustees continue to use the income for educational purposes.
