Description

Ashfield House is a large detached house, now divided into multiple occupancy, built before 1849. It was constructed by William Cole Wood, who was a principal tradesman and landowner in the area. The house is built of ham stone ashlar, with hipped Welsh slate roofs and stone chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with a basement, and has four bays. The design incorporates a plinth, string courses, an eaves cornice and a plain low parapet, with end pilasters. Casement windows are present, with 6 panes above and 8 panes below, set within architraves. The upper windows have bracketted cills supported by console brackets to hoods, while the lower windows have hoods and aprons. The basement windows are arched. Bay three is emphasised as a short tower, featuring flanking panelled pilasters, a Doric porch with fluted columns in antis, an entablature set within a segmental arch, and a pair of studded four-panel doors with a fanlight and sidelight. There is a pediment at the eaves level and an open balustrade. A single-storey lean-to, apparently built in a similar style but possibly at a later date, adjoins bay four, with three bays each containing plain sash windows. The north-east corner is chamfered. The south side mirrors the north-east elevation, with three wide bays; the outer bays project slightly, and the centre bay features a segmental bow, with remnants of a verandah at a lower level. The interior has not been inspected.
