Description
The Market Cross, also known as The Pinnacle, is located on Church Street and features a medieval base with a column dated 1741. The structure, which stands about 6 metres tall, was almost entirely rebuilt in 1982 using Ham stone ashlar. It has a circular base on a circular step, with additional stones at the cardinal points. Above this is a square, stepped plinth block that supports a fluted Tuscan column, which is said to have been modeled after one at Wilton. Atop the column is a block with four sundial faces, one of which displays the 1741 date and has rod gnomons. The structure is finished with a ball finial that is crowned by a wrought-iron weathervane. It is believed that the upper column was added by the then Lord of the Manor, as noted by Pooley in "Old Crosses of Somerset" from 1872.
