Description
The Market House, located on Church Street, is an 18th-century structure built from ham stone ashlar with a plain clay tile roof over stone slate base courses. It features coped gables with kneelers and a stone chimney stack. The building stands two storeys high and consists of four bays by a single bay. It has a plinth, a band course, and a dentilled eaves course. The lower level was originally completely open, supported by keystoned three-centred arches with imposts that continue as band courses. In the 1960s, the two northern bays were converted into public conveniences around an enclosed staircase. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows set in architraves on the sides. The south gable features a Venetian window with a console-bracketed cill on the first floor, along with a semi-circular pierced stone vent in a keystoned architrave at the gable. The north gable is similar but has a standard 12-pane window and is topped with a small bell-turret that still holds its bell. The ground floor infill matches the original detailing. The interior has not been seen. The building was likely constructed around 1753 by order of the vestry, although it may have been built by the Slades, who acquired the manor in 1759. It was restored and reopened between 1960 and 1961.
