Description
Diggins Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600, with later additions from the early 19th century. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring two storeys and a complex square plan made up of three ranges from different periods. The south-east facing range has four double-hung sash windows with small square panes above three similar windows, and a central early 19th-century door at the rear, which has a flat hood supported by scroll brackets. The roof is covered with peg tiles and has hips at either end that return to the side ranges. At the ridge, there are two 18th-century stacks that have been rebuilt to their original form.
The north-west range is encased in painted brick and has a parapetted gable, also two storeys high. The south-east range includes a two-storey block with a hipped peg tile roof, along with a 20th-century single-storey block that has a hipped roof and a gabled dormer on the south-east facing slopes. At the rear, the blocks are connected by a painted brick parapet. The windows in the rear ranges are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements with small panes.
Inside, the north-west range features high-quality late 16th-century framing with tapering jowls and broadly stop-chamfered bridging joists. It has a side purlin roof with collars and large curved windbracing. An unusual tie beam at the first floor level has a moulded soffit where it meets the jowled post. There are also fragments of 17th-century panelling, including one section with a carved frieze. The staircase includes a moulded handrail and square newel posts from a reused 17th-century staircase.
