Description
Marton Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with extensions from the early 19th century and later alterations. The building features a timber frame with plaster infill set on a high rendered plinth, and brick additions that are now roughcast. It has graded slate roofs and an original L-plan layout, consisting of a hall range with a cross-wing to the west, and an early 19th-century range that runs parallel to the cross-wing on the south side.
The farmhouse is two storeys high. The framing is exposed on the hall range, showcasing small square panels, with four panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate, and apparently inverted jowled wall posts at the north gable end. The roof structure includes a collar and tie beam end truss with V-struts from the collar and double purlins. The cross-wing is largely hidden from view by the later range to the south and a painted brick two-storey lean-to on the north side, although crow-stepping is visible on the gable.
The hall range features two late 19th-century casement windows flanking an earlier infilled window directly below the eaves on the left, with another late 19th-century casement below. The south range has two late 20th-century casements on each floor, along with a contemporary gabled timber porch to the left. The right gable end retains one 16-paned sash window in a stone surround on each floor. A prominent red brick stack is located in the roof slope of the cross-wing at the junction with the hall range, while a tall red brick ridge stack is positioned approximately in the centre of the south range. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
