Description
The Church of St. Mark is a chapel of ease that now serves as a parish church, built in 1855 with later alterations. It features regularly coursed limestone and shale rubble with ashlar dressings and machine tile roofs. The structure includes a nave with a west bellcote, a chancel, a north porch, and a south vestry, all designed in a lancet style.
The nave is buttressed in three bays, with lancet windows paired in the east and west bays on the north and south sides. The west window consists of paired lancets with a quatrefoil above, and there is a stone bellcote. The west bay on the north side has a gabled timber porch resting on low stone walls. The short chancel is divided into two bays, featuring paired cusped lancets in the west bay on the north side and an east window with three lancets topped by a cusped quatrefoil. The lean-to vestry is located on the south side at the angle with the nave.
Inside, the church is very plain, with trussed rafter roofs in both the nave and chancel, and a pointed chancel arch. The east window contains stained glass dating from 1903. The parish of Marton was established from part of Chirbury in 1859. The church is included for its group value.
