Description

Mill Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century, with later alterations. It has a timber frame with plaster infill and a graded slate roof. The building features a two-cell plan and is one storey high with an attic. The framing consists of small square panels, with three panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate, and short straight tension braces at the rear. The right gable end is made of roughly coursed limestone rubble, which includes an original integral end stack that has been rebuilt in 20th century red brick. The left gable end is made of mid-19th century red brick and has a small integral stack.

At the center of the cottage is a late 19th or 20th century gabled timber framed porch, which has both inner and outer doors from the 20th century. To the left of the porch is a late 19th century casement window, and to the right is a late 20th century mullion window. There is also a late 19th century gabled eaves dormer with two casements immediately to the left. At the rear on the right side, there is a large stone bread oven.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed throughout, with woven and wattle and daub infill visible in two panels. There are vertical posts in the cross-wall, which has an infilled doorway that predates an oak winder staircase against the back wall. The right ground-floor room features two chamfered spine beams, with the front beam having stepped stops and flat joists. There is a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel. The roof is a single-purlin structure in two unequal bays, with a central collar and tie beam truss. Mill Cottage was formerly part of a mill complex.
