Description
Tilehouse Farm is a farmhouse, probably from the 15th and 16th centuries, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. It has two storeys and features gabled roofs covered with peg tiles. The building has an 'L' shaped plan, with the shorter northern arm being taller and topped with a large gablet to balance the ridges. A very large square chimney stack is positioned on the ridge line against the north side of the crosswing. The windows are primarily 19th-century casements with two horizontal glazing bars, alongside some older small 17th-century iron casements. There is a stair tower located at the rear angle between the two blocks. The front door, in its original position, is sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch with a peg tile roof.
Inside, there is an elaborate two-bay crosswing, likely from the 15th century, which was formerly jettied at the front and has a very complete smoke bay at the rear. The north flank contains three service door openings, two of which have moulded jambs, with one door that previously led to stairs for the upper level. The roof is a massively framed side purlin type, featuring large wind bracing and collars. There are indications of a former ground floor oriel window on the front, as well as some inserted ovolo-mullioned windows. The northern block serves as an integrally floored hall block from the early to mid-16th century, complete with a newel stair at the rear.
