Description

Hill Farm Cottage is a house dating from the late 14th to early 15th century. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring both two storeys and one storey with attics. Originally a hall house, it includes a crosswing at the south end. The front displays a half hipped peg tile roof and a gabled single storey block at the north end. There is an off-centre stack rising through the front roof slope and a small stack against the south gable. The cottage has two gabled peg tiled dormers and an unarticulated triangle gable at the north end. The windows are 20th century small pane casements. At the rear, there is a continuous peg tile lean-to with a horizontal roof light and a large lean-to dormer also covered in peg tiles.

Inside, there are substantial remains of the timber frame from the early 15th century house, along with the contemporary crosswing, which has had its front gable removed. The crownpost is of the cross-quadrant type and has been reused as a stair newel post. There is a 17th-century stack and inglenook. An old front door, now located in an outbuilding, features a semi-circular hood with a scalloped shell pattern. This door, made of solid oak boards and probably dating from the late 16th century, has moulded battens.
