Description
High Easterbury is a house that dates from the 13th century, with elements from the 14th and 16th centuries, and possibly even earlier. It is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, topped with peg tile roofs. The building has two storeys and a complex layout. The front features a long range with a hipped roof at the west end and a gabled crosswing at the east. There is also a single-storey block with a gabled peg tile roof extending beyond this. At the rear, there are two two-storey blocks with hipped roofs and two lean-to outshots, one of which has a pantile roof.
The house has two concertina brick stacks: one rises through the roof of the single-storey east block, and the other is positioned against the rear wall of the main range. The front elevation includes four double-hung sash windows with square panes and moulded surrounds on the first floor, while the ground floor features small pane casements. There is a lean-to conservatory attached to the west end of the facade. The west end wall displays two pointed arched leaded light casements in a Gothick style.
Attached to the rear wall is a timber-cased yard pump with a lead spout. A post from a former aisled hall is visible, complete with a passing brace socket. The west end appears to include remnants of a 13th or 14th-century solar, featuring heavy centre tenoned floor joists and a large post with two shaped knee-like braces. A timber at the northwest corner has a secret notched lap mortice. The east crosswing is from the late 16th century and retains three moulded doors from the 16th or 17th century, along with a solid tread staircase leading to the attic. The main roof has framed side purlins and dates to the 17th century. The site is moated.
