Description
This is an early to mid-15th century timber-framed house located on the east side of The Street in High Easter. The building was originally listed as being south of the Cock & Bell Inn. It is now externally plastered with 20th-century pargetting. The roof is gabled and has peg tiles, with a gable-end stack at the south end.
Penvites is a long, jetty house of two storeys, featuring four exposed jetty brackets on the front elevation. There are three double-hung sash windows with two vertical glazing bars on the first floor, while the ground floor has two smaller windows and a rebuilt square bay window with small panes. A carriageway is located at the north end, with boarded flanks.
The house is notable for its early and elaborate long wall jetty construction. It retains original moulded bridging joists and a crown post roof. Within the main chamber, a cross quadrate crown post remains, displaying broached chamfers and four-way bracing. Numerous tie beam arch braces and part of the door head are also surviving features. In the rear wall, one complete diamond mullion window can be seen.
