Description
The Old Post Office is a house that was formerly a shop, dating from the late 15th century and mid 16th century. It features a timber frame and plaster exterior, with some old chevron pargetting on the west wall facing the churchyard. The building has gabled roofs covered in peg tiles and is made up of two crosswing-like structures that are at right angles to each other, each with a dragon beam and posts at the exposed corners.
The jettied east elevation includes an early 19th-century porch supported by double console brackets and filled with lattice work. The windows are double-hung sashes with small panes, along with 19th-century casements that also have small panes. On the south side, there is a 19th-century red brick lean-to with a machine-made plain tile roof. A 17th-century red brick chimney stack with joined diagonal shafts is positioned against the south wall, featuring a pointed arched brick inglenook.
Inside, the eastern crosswing has a simple crown post roof with thin braces, while the west crosswing contains two panelled 17th-century doors and similar wall panelling with a carved frieze. The north fronts of each crosswing have arched door heads and shopfronts with arch heads, which are now concealed by plaster.
