Description
The Punch Bowl is a restaurant and flat that was originally a house, dating back to the 16th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with peg tile roofs. The main range is two stories tall and includes a gabled crosswing at the south end, which jetties on three sides and has some exposed dragon posts. At the north end, there is a lower two-story block with a hipped end and a low two-story lean-to extension at the rear.
The front of the crosswing displays some exposed framing and an original jetty bracket. A large 16th-century rear wall stack has a rebuilt rectangular shaft on the main range, which also features an arched header inglenook on the first floor. There are two tall stacks on the edge of the roof of the southern crosswing. The windows are 20th-century casements, and the crosswing has plain bargeboards along with an oak front door from the 20th century.
Inside, the main range has heavily moulded bridging and floor joists with two chamfer rolls separated by flat fillets. The roof is constructed with housed side purlins, heavy arched windbracing, and principal rafters with thickened tops. The crosswing is a later extension from the late 16th century, featuring a side purlin wind-braced roof and halved and bladed scarf joints. The front first-floor room of the main range retains remnants of a large side window opening.
