Description
Dukes Cottage is a 16th century house that features a timber frame and plastered exterior, with the lower floor on the south side clad in black weatherboarding. The roof is gabled and covered with peg tiles, featuring a stack against the east gable and an older stack located through the front roof slope near the west end. There is a hipped lean-to with peg tiles against the west end and a peg tile lean-to made of rendered block at the back on the east end. The front has a central 20th century gabled porch with peg tiles, and the windows are 20th century casements. This late medieval open hall house includes an arch brace in the parlour partition, large jowled storey posts in the hall, and a single storey service block. The 'high' east end has two storey framing. Inside, there is an inglenook fireplace at the west end of the hall and remnants of a framed partition in the 'high' end. Dukes Cottage is an unusual example of an open hall with full two storey inline ancillary accommodation and a raised roof line.
