Description

The Bell Public House is a public house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, featuring a timber-framed and plastered structure with a complex plan. It has a two-bay crosswing at the north end that juts out over the street, topped with a gabled peg tile roof, which was extended by one bay at a later date. The main range has a low gabled peg tile roof, and at the rear, there is a parallel range with a taller, half-hipped peg tile roof. A 20th-century lean-to extension is attached to the north side of the wall wing, which adjoins a tall flank wall stack. The small crosswing shows signs of a former crownpost roof but has been significantly altered in the 17th century. The front range features jowled posts and consists of two bays with a narrow stack bay at the south end. The rear block is two storeys high, with jowled posts, close studding, and a 'V' strut roof, likely from the early 17th century.
