Description
Wardens Hall is an early 18th century farmhouse, believed to have been originally designed as a gentleman’s residence. It has a roughly ‘L’ shaped layout. The main part of the building is largely constructed of pale red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with plastered timber framing and red brick visible at the rear internal angles. A slate roofed, gabled extension was added in the 20th century to the southeast corner, and there is a lean-to range along the rear internal flank wall. The original roof sections are tiled and hipped at the ends. Two ridge stacks are situated on the front of the building, each side of the central passage.
The north front has five window bays, with the central three slightly projecting. The first floor has five square double-hung sash windows with thick glazing bars and large panes, set under segmental arched heads. On the ground floor, a central, painted wooden door surround features a moulded cornice, simple block rustication, and a triple keystone. Flanking the door are pairs of conventionally proportioned double-hung sash windows, each under a segmental arched head made of ribbed brick. The right-hand windows on both floors are painted dummies.
The large north ground floor room contains mid-18th century panelling and a mullioned cornice, along with a pair of door surrounds with pedimented friezes and a moulded overmantel. The property stands in a moated location. It is believed to have been built for Sir John Salter, who died in 1740 and was a Lord Mayor of London, and the building seems to have been only partially completed according to its original design.
