Description

The building at No 7 Springfield Road, known as the hop kiln and office and store from the former Gray's Brewery, dates from the 19th century. It is designed on an L-plan and consists of two storeys, with the hop kiln located within the return of the two ranges. The kiln features a tall truncated square-conoid roof topped with a flat lid, which is slate-clad and has leaded hips. The street-facing side is constructed of stock brick and includes four pilasters and a projecting band at the first floor. The roofs are ridged, gabled, and also slate-clad, complete with eaves and troughing.

The ground floor has a central door flanked by a window on each side, all beneath brick arches. The first floor features a central loop-hole and a window six courses deep on each side. There is one chimney stack made of stock brick. Notably, the east end of the front range has an enlarged first-floor band that forms a serpentine pediment made of brickwork, which includes a circular stone medallion carved with a phoenix and is dated 1801.
