Description

26 High Street is an early 18th century building that was formerly the Judge's Lodging. It features a red brick facade with four storeys and a five-window range, showcasing double hung sashes with glazing bars set in plain reveals. The building has a parapet with an elaborate modillioned cornice and stone coping. The central bay projects forward, and the fourth floor window is adorned with a wide rusticated brick architrave. The central third floor window is topped with a brick pediment supported by pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and there are brick aprons beneath the third and fourth floor windows. All window heads are finished with gauged brick flat arches. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a moulded string course, two modern windows, and three doors, with the main door positioned centrally. The front of the building has modern rendering at the ground and first floor levels. The structure is L-shaped in plan, with modern extensions at the rear, while the main timbers of the roof are original to the 18th century.

Inside, the ground floor features decorative glazed partitions from around 1900, which include etched glass, semi-circular main panels, and fretted spandrels, as well as cast iron columns with foliated capitals from the same period. The original staircase retains a twisted stem balustrade and a moulded, wreathed handrail. On the first and second floors, original details include panelled walls, dentilled friezes, and egg and dart architraves. There is a fire surround with classical details and open pediments above, along with heavily moulded skirting boards and original panelled doors.
